CDP: We would love to gain some insight into your role at Carnival Australia and how you achieve your work, life, balance.
What is your role at Carnival Australia and what is a good day for you?
AH: I am the Vice President of People and Performance for Carnival Australia. Carnival Australia is part of Carnival Corporation & plc and represents the world’s most popular cruise brands including Carnival Cruise Line, Cunard Line, Holland America Line, P&O Cruises, P&O Cruises World Cruising, Princess Cruises and Seabourn. Together these brands represent approximately 80 per cent of the Australian and New Zealand cruise market. There is no typical day in HR, nor in the cruise industry. On any given day I might be creating talent management frameworks, drafting papers for our remuneration committee, negotiating international manning agreements or working out an effective talent acquisition strategy that makes sense across 60 different countries. Its a dynamic environment and very interesting work.
CDP: As a mum of twin girls, how do you juggle your career, husband, friends and still find time for yourself?
AH: I adhere to the philosophy that you can have it all, just not all at once. There are times when the pendulum swings to fulfilling work commitments and there are times when I make the priority my girls. I don’t always get it right. Whilst I don’t have family who live in the next neighbourhood, I do have a very supportive and equal partnership with my husband. My girls are fortunate enough to have a fabulous nanny who has been with us for a long time, so I have a great support system to leverage, I’m lucky in that respect.
CDP: Which women inspire you and why?
AH: Number one; my mother. Strong. Powerful. Independent. Opinionated. Funny. Successful. Cheeky. Spontaneous. And just the right amount of crazy. The women I attract in my life, my friendship circles, all tend to share the same qualities.
CDP: Do you have a mantra for business? if so what is it and how has it supported you throughout your career journey?
AH: I have strong values in transparency, trust and the importance of genuine relationships. That means I’ve always shared my life with my team and I’m genuinely interested in theirs. It’s through this connection that I feel I get to understand deeper motivations for behaviour and work out how to the get the best from my team, playing to strengths and better managing frustrations. As far as a mantra; its probably because of my Richard Branson experiences – I buy into the “people first” philosophy. I truely believe if you get the people piece right, the better the guest experience, the greater the shareholder return.
